Description
Imperial German Naval Officers' Banjo Shoulder Boards. A superb example of early 19th century craftsmanship featuring a liberal use of gold wire to create these visually stunning pair of shoulder boards. The boards feature gold wire crescents applied directly to gilt tape backing. Large nickel silver fouled anchor devices and two rank pips are mounted to each board. Single gilt Imperial Naval buttons (attached to brass hooks) complete each board. Thin strands of gold-wire fringe decorate the side of each board. The undersides of the boards were once backed with navy blue wool, but sadly time and insects have taken their toll and little of the backing remains.
