    Identified Civil War Officer's Forage Cap With Original Insignia and CDV of the Officer Wearing the Hat. Carte de Visite with period ink script presentation on verso, "From Your Ever true friend Lieut. T. Churchill Co. A 3rd M. S. C. Troops Morris Island, S. C. to his Friends Mr. and Mrs. B. C. C. White with respects." Thaddeus Churchill originally enlisted as a Sergeant in the 39th Mass. Inf. on 8/7/62 and was discharged for promotion to Lieutenant in the 3rd US Colored Troops on 11/18/63. He subsequently resigned on 11/14/64. Hat with blue wool body with scattered mothing. Original gold bullion embroidered infantry horn insignia on the front with embroidered numeral 3 in center. 5/8" leather chinstrap with gilded brass buckle and leather loop, eagle I side buttons. Tarred, bound leather visor. Black silk lining which has come loose at the sides exposing padding. Crown with stitched concentric ring pattern. 1 1/8" Moroccan leather sweatband with a number of breaks but 95% present. Completely untouched Civil War officer's forage cap with excellent ID / history.
