Congressional Medal of Honor Winner Samuel Wright, 29th Massachusetts Inf.: His White Canvas/ Cotton Civil War Haversack. Shows heavy use with reinforcing on one side where the sling attaches and heavy wear where the sling attaches on the other side. Closure is affected with two bone buttons. Retains the original rice bag which is also affixed by two bone buttons. Printed in heavy black ink on the inside edge of the front flap "Samuel Wright". Stenciled on the front of the haversack is "E / 29". Norm Flayderman handled the sale of the Wright collection many years ago, which is the point of origin of this haversack. Samuel C. Wright was an 18 year old farmer when he enlisted in the 29th Mass. Vol.. Inf. on 5/18/61. He served with the 29th through the entire war, being mustered out for wounds on 2/3/65. Wright was wounded at White Oak Swamp 6/30/62, Antietam 9/17/62, Bethesda Church, Va. 6/3/64 and Petersburg, Va. 7/30/64. He was awarded the Congressional Medal Of Honor for action at Antietam, when he volunteered to tear down a fence in the face of murderous enemy fire. Because of Flayderman's initial presentation of the Wright material, along with his truly remarkable record, Wright is probably, among collectors, one of the best known enlisted men in the Union Army. Important and historic piece.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
