    Description

Civil War-Era Frock Coat of General John McNeil of St. Louis.
Military-style double-breasted blue wool coat, designed for two columns of buttons (five still present). There are four buttons on the tail or back side. The buttons are non-military. It has a green cotton lining. Some fading, light soiling, wear to collar, minor mothing, rips to lining and scattered repairs. The most interesting repair is a chevron-shape patch on the right sleeve. It comes with a Letter of Authenticity from "The Union Drummer Boy" which indicates it was the property of John McNeil of Missouri. John McNeil (1813-1891) served throughout the Missouri theater of operations during the course of the war. He commanded both infantry and cavalry brigades. Besides punitive raids against rebel guerillas, he distinguished himself at Cape Girardeau, the defense of St. Louis against Sterling Price's army, ultimately defeating Price at Newtonia on October 28, 1864. Given the materials used and overall style of the coat, we surmise it saw military use at one time and was repurposed after the war. Ex: Stephen B. Saathoff Collection.
