Rare American Militia Spiked Helmet Patterned After the Prussian Model 1842 Pickelhaube. A seldom-seen example of early American military headgear with a nod to German style. The helmet measures approximately 15 ¼-inches to the top of the spike. The spike itself measures 6-inches and is mounted on a cruciform base. The base is mounted to the helmet via four domed studs attached with threaded nuts. All metal parts are gilded including the spike, base, front visor trim, rear spine and leather-backed chin scales. The front of the helmet is mounted with an 1821 pattern eagle with 3-inch wingspan and 1834 pattern artillery crossed cannon below. The insignia has wire mounted to the back for mounting. The convex chin scales are affixed to the helmet with plain rosettes secured by threaded and slotted bosses. A red, white and blue leather cockade is mounted on the right side of the helmet. The liner is composed of a wide 2 ½-inch leather sweatband and thick hessian lining. No maker marks or marking of any kind visible. Seldom encountered, especially in this condition.

Condition: Excellent. Appears unrestored, though if some repair or restoration has been done, it was professionally done. The chin scale buckle is lacking.
