Prussian General of Artillery Spiked Helmet (Kugelhelm). A fine helmet measuring approximately 9-inches to the top of the artillery ball. No readily visible maker or size markings. The impressive front plate features an expansive gilded-eagle with a detailed guard star mounted to the eagle's breast. The front plate is mounted to the helmet via two threaded posts with washers and square retaining nuts. There are no additional holes in the helmet body. The cruciform base supports a 4-inch artillery spike and is mounted to the top of the helmet with four-threaded star-head retainers held in place by washers and square nuts. A gilded spine runs from the rear of the spike base to the edge of the back visor. The underside of the back visor is backed in red. The slightly convex gilded chinscales are mounted to the helmet body via plain rosettes with split-pin backs. Both cockades are present. The square front visor is backed in green and trimmed in gilt. The liner features a 2-inch wide leather sweatband and silk head liner.

Condition: Very good or better. The helmet body exhibits a few shallow dents with some crazing to the leather surface. Some trivial loss to the white enamel on the guard star. The leather sweatband is stained and shows signs of honest use; the silk head liner is dirty and has started to come away from the back of the leather. An easy repair. From the collection of J. T. Hamrick, M.D.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
