Prussian Brunswick Reserve Infantry NCOs' Spiked Helmet.

Lacquered leather body with round front visor and back spine trimmed in gilt. Gilded-eagle front plate with affixed silver Brunswick star and arms with "Peninsula" bandeau. Separately affixed with a silver reservists' cross. The mounting holes in the front body have been enlarged but there are no additional holes present. A 3 ½-inch gilt spike is mounted on a round base mounted to the helmet by four round stud retainers. The cockades are mounted beneath gilded flat chinscales held by simple rosette bosses. Officers' style liner has a 2 ½-inch leather sweatband and rose pink silk headliner. Remnants of a maker's paper label is mounted to the inside crown and the helmet is marked size 54 ¼. The underside of the front visor is trimmed in green morocco; the rear in red morocco.

Condition: Very good. Light crazing to the exterior with some modest scuffing and light scrapes; the leather sweatband has some vermin damage as does the morocco underlining of the visors; the silk headliner is faded. From the collection of J.T. Hamrick, M.D.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
