Oldenburg Model 1897 Infantry Regiment Number 91 Officer's Helmet. The helmet measures approximately 10 ½-inches to the tip of the spike. The front visor is trimmed in gilded-brass; the neck shield is untrimmed. The multi-piece Oldenburg front plate is mounted to the helmet via two threaded posts and nuts. There are no additional holes in the helmet body. A gilded-brass spine runs from the lower edge of the neck shield to the spike base. The 5-inch tall spike is set upon a round base held to the helmet via four star-head screws. The flat chin scales are mounted to the helmet via split-pin rosettes. The helmet lacks the Oldenburg state cockade, having instead two Reich cockades. The helmet is complete with a wide leather sweat band and silk lining. The interior metal disk that supports the spike base is lacking.

Condition: Very good. With the usual light to moderate crazing to the surface of the leather, more so on the visor. The neck shield has come completely unstitched and is being held by the spine. From the collection of J. T. Hamrick, M. D.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
