New York Empire Brigade Recruiting Broadside. This is one of the most dynamic and colorful Civil War recruiting broadsides we have ever seen. It measures 23" x 37" and is titled: "Attention, To Save Your Country! Second Regiment Empire Brigade! Col. P. J. Claassen, Commanding. First Regiment in the Field Under the New Call." The central illustration depicts a Union Zouave soldier, holding an American flag aloft, while placing one foot on a prostrate rebel soldier laying on top of a CSA flag. An idyllic scene on the left shows Union troops saying their farewells and marching off to war on a sunny day. The stormy scene on the right shows Southern homes in flames, dead livestock and general mayhem and chaos. This central scene is vibrantly hand-colored. The broadside was printed by Baker & Godwin of New York. The Empire, or Spinola Brigade, was mustered in October 4, 1862 and mustered out June 29, 1865. Seventy-one enlisted men died at the hands of the enemy while twenty-eight were killed through the accidental explosion of torpedoes at Bachellor's Creek, North Carolina, May 26, 1864. Their main engagement in the war occurred at New Bern. The broadside was originally folded in sixteenths and subsequently mounted to a board. There are some areas of loss, especially along the central horizontal fold. There is some restoration in the vertical fold. All in all, a superlative piece of Civil War graphic art.
