Military Beret Belonging to British General Foote with Letters. A black wool officer's beret of the Royal Tank Regiment. Interior label reads, "CONWAY/WILLIAMS/48 BROOK ST, / MAYFAIR,/LONDON. W.I./AND/CAMBERLEY." Front of beret with KC regimental badge in white metal. Sold together with a 3 1/2-inch x 4 1/2-inch signed color photograph of a portrait of General Foote in dress uniform as Colonel-Commandant of the RTR. Included in the lot are two letters, both signed by General Foote which reference his beret. Henry Robert Bowreman Foote won the Victoria Cross while commanding 7th Royal Tank Regiment in North Africa. On June 6, 1942, although wounded, he continued to lead his regiment from an exposed position on the outside of a tank, thereby helping to frustrate a German attempt to encircle two British divisions. A week later, when his regiment had come under intense artillery and anti-tank fire, Foote walked from tank to tank, encouraging the crews. He subsequently became Director-General of Fighting Vehicles and then Director of the Royal Armoured Corps (1955-58). He died in 1993. Condition: Excellent. Light age wear and patina.
