Little Bighorn: Indian Scout Mitch Bouyer Relic. This lot has two buttons worn by Mitch Bouyer (1837-1876), an esteemed scout of French-Canadian and Sioux lineage. Next to Jim Bridger, he was considered the finest scout by some in the military. He served in the 2nd Cavalry, but was assigned to the 7th at the request of General Custer who needed additional scouts who were familiar with the Crow tribe. Supposedly, he and another scout saw the large Indian encampment and relayed the intelligence to Custer who chose to ignore it. Bouyer accompanied Custer's men into battle and what he no doubt knew as "sure death" and died in the effort. This lot has a coat and cuff button (7/8" and 5/8" respectively) attached to a strip of calf skin. Each button has an American eagle and the inscription "U S Indian Service". A paper label that accompanies the buttons is inscribed: "These Indian Service buttons were taken from the jacket of Mitch Boyer [sic] an Indian agent who was killed in the Battle of the Big Horn. He was a Custer scout. cat. #OOD-416."
