Lieut. Herman J. Haase 49th NY Vol. Gold ID Pin.
Rarely do high quality ID pins like this appear on the market, especially where the soldier was KIA. More often than not these high quality well crafted pins were not worn in battle, but this example possibly was. It appears to be a gift from a family friend, being Dr. A.J. Wright, Fredonia, NY, which is stamped on the reverse. The front of the pin is beautifully engraved "Lieut H.J. Haase, Buffalo, N.Y. At the center in an American eagle and shield with "49th Regt." and "N.Y.S. Vol". Haase enlisted on 9/5/61 as a Sergeant. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant on 6/11/62. He possibly wore this pin at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and finally Spotsylvania Court House where Haase was killed on 5/12/64. Measures .875" X 1". Superb craftsmanship!

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
