    Description

    Precursor to the F.B.I.

Law Enforcement: Early Department of Justice Badge. 1 1/2" x 2 3/8" badge for the "Bureau of Investigation US Department of Justice". It appears to be gold-plated brass and is stamped on the back "Whitehead & Hoag Newark, N.J. Gold Filled" and "566". An eagle appears at top and a shield at the bottom. The background is stippled. Superb detail throughout. It has both a C-type pin attachment on the verso with added loops for use on a belt. This type of badge saw use between 1908 and 1927. The Bureau of Investigation later became the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) beginning in 1935. This is the first example we have seen or handled. If you ever felt the urge to play "G-Man", now's your chance!

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
