United States Colored Troops [USCT]: Historic Dog Tag of Benjamin Hannon.
Fabulous dog tag issued to an African American soldier. The "tag" is 30 mm white metal. One side is stamped: " Benj Geo Hannon/ Co. C/ 97th U.S./ C.T./ Enl. At/ P. Hudson/ May 19th 63." The other side reads "War of 1861 Engaged in the Above Battles" with a wreath at the bottom. The "blank field" is stamped: "Port Hudson/ Shreveport/ Pleasant Hill/ Yellow Bayou/ Spanish Fort/ Ft Blakely/ Mobile". It is suspended by an rare, irregularly-shaped silvered brass hanger with portrait of "Maj. Gen. Jos. Hooker. 1863". It still retains its brooch-style attachment. Given the place of enlistment and locale of most of the battles, Hannon was likely a former slave or "free person of color" who reached Union lines and enlisted in the "Louisiana Native Guards" or Corps d'Afrique. The 1st, 3rd and 4th regiments of the Native Guard Infantry were eventually made part of the 97th U. S. Colored Troops. The tag retains some of its original chrome finish. There are some minor rim bruises, but it is in great condition overall. An important piece.
