Description
Nice Grouping Associated With Colonel Henry Larcom Abbott, West Point Class of 1854. Henry Larcom Abbott (1831-1927) graduated from the U. S. Military Academy at West Point in 1854 - the second in his class. Though he was more interested in artillery, a classmate convinced him to chose the Engineers. In 1855 he was chosen to work with Lieutenant Robert Williamson's Pacific Railroad in California and Oregon. To honor his work on this survey, the California Geological Survey named Mount Abbot in the Sierra Nevada after him in 1873. Abbott was also involved with hydrographic surveys of the Mississippi River. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Abbott was assigned to Brigadier General Irvin McDowell's forces and was wounded at the First Battle of Bull Run. He was brevetted major for his service at the siege of Yorktown On January 19, 1863 he was appointed colonel of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery Regiment but was soon after transferred to the Washington Defenses where he commanded a brigade. Abbott was brevetted to Brigadier General of volunteers in 1864 and again brevetted to Brigadier General of regulars in 1865. Abbott served with distinction during the war, commanding all siege artillery in the Army of the Potomac. After the war he served as a colonel in the U.S. Army Engineers. He created the army's Engineer School of Application in Willet's Point, New York. In 1869 he served on an Engineer Board which standardized the pontoon and bridge building equipment of the army based on patterns developed during the Civil War. He edited and published United States Bridge Equipage and Drill in 1869 and his plate volume from that publication is part of this lot. The large book measures 22" x 15½" and is titled Plates to Illustrate the Bridge Equipage of the U.S. Army With Directions for the Construction of Military Bridges. The book contains eighteen plates profusely illustrated with schematic drawings of various types of military bridges. Given the book's size it is remarkable that it has survived in its current pristine condition. Also included in the lot are four of Abbott's engineer castle insignia. Two of the castles are complete with pinbacks and were meant to be attached to his epaulettes; one example features loops for sewing on the collar and is marked sterling; and the last example is rather immense with loops on the back meant to worn within a wreath on a hat. Finally, the lot has two unmarked Engineer cuff buttons and two tunic buttons, one marked "Scovill". The consignor indicates that these items were acquired from the estate of the late Colonel Walter Plummer, USA (retired, USMA, Class of 1945.Auction Info

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.View More Testimonials
