Lot of Two Important Imperial French Decorations.

Comprising: 1) Croix D'Honneur awarded to Colonel the Baron Peugnet. This honor includes a handwritten letter dated 1851 from the Colonel's widow to her nephew Louis Desire Peugnet stating that this was made personally by Napoleon to Baron Peugnet at the Camp of Boulogne in 1804. [LETTRE DE LA BARONNE PEUGNET A M. LOUIS PEUGNET.......ACCOMPAYNANT LA REMISE DE LA CROIX DE LA LEGION A'HOUNNEUR]. Also included is 2) St. Helena medal [MEDAILLE DE SAINTE-HELENE] awarded to Louis Peugnet, with original award certificate dated May 5th 1821 [5 MAI 1821]. Medal marked NAPOLEON I / EMPEREUR and CAMPAGNES DE 1792 A 1815 / A SES COMPAGNOS DE GLOIRE SA DERNIERE PENSEE ST HELENA 5 MAI 1821 obverse. Note: This two medal set was previously sold at Butterfields in San Francisco under the sale, Fine Antique and Collectible Arms & Historic Memorabilia on August 28, 200 under lot 2520 stating provenance from the Peugnet family. Interesting to note regarding the Croix D'Honneur, the Legion of Honour is the highest French order of Merit, both military and civil, established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte. If the recollection of the Peugnet family is accurate, there is a possibility this could have been one of those first awards given out by Napoleon himself on August 16 1804 at a camp near Boulogne as stated in French history and mentioned on the letter included in the sale, in addition the historical record mentions participating in the famous Battle of Wagram and Austerlitz and sustained wounds!...... Hard to imagine being wounded and surviving, truly a remarkable grouping and family provenance. Contained in contemporary case for storing purposes.
    Provenance: Peugnet Family

Condition: 1) Croix D'Honneur is fair, medal bent and showing heavy losses to enamel. 2) St. Helena is missing ribbon, otherwise showing age wear. The Estate of the Late Hiroshi Harada of Piedmont, California.
