Imperial German Prussian Generals' Spiked Helmet.

A hard-used veteran measuring about 11-inches tall with polished leather skull and visors. All trim is gilded-brass and of nice quality. The impressive eagle front plate is mounted with a guard star with the "Suum Cuique" motto. The plate is mounted to the helmet via loops with leather thong retainers. There are no additional holes in the body. A cruciform base supports a 5-inch tall, fluted removable spike. The base is secured to the body via four star-head retainers. The gilded-brass chin scales are mounted to the body with simple rosettes which secure a single Prussian black and white cockade on the wearer's left side. The helmet is complete with the 2-inch wide leather sweatband and split-silk lining. The underside of the front visor is lined with green morocco leather; the rear visor lined with red morocco. There are no visible markings on the inside of the helmet though the number "9758" is stamped in two places on the sweatband, the significance of which is unknown.

Condition: About good. The front visor is a bit misshapen and there are light dents scattered on the skull; the base where the spike screws in has a small area of loss; the rear visor has a 1-inch closed tear; the silk lining is tattered and frayed. From the collection of J.T. Hamrick, M.D.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
