Prussian Guard Landwehr Pioneer Battalion Officer's Helmet. A Model 1897 helmet measuring approximately 10-inches to the tip of the spike. The front visor trimmed in silver; the neck shield unadorned. The helmet features a silvered guard eagle front plate with separately attached guard star. The Landwehr cross exhibits only traces of the original gilt. The plate is mounted to the helmet body with threaded posts and nuts. There are no additional holes in the helmet body. A silvered spine runs from the edge of the neck shield to the spike base. A 4 ½-inch tall silvered spike is mounted to a round silvered base held by four gilded star-head screws. Flat, gilded chin scales are mounted to the helmet by silvered rosettes. Complete with both cockades. Two-inch wide leather sweat band and silk lining. No visible size or maker's marks. A rare helmet. A similar helmet appears in volume one, page 210 of Joachim Hilsenbeck's book Deutsche Offiziershelme aus der Kaiserzeit 1870-1918.

Condition: Near excellent. Minor crazing to the surface of the leather, most notably on the visor and neck shield. Silk lining with some ink marks. Neck shield has a 3-inch section that has come unstitched. From the collection of J. T. Hamrick, M.D.
