    Description

Prussian Garde Dragoon Landwehr Officers' Spiked Helmet. Another candidate for an easy restoration, this dragoon helmet is trimmed in gilt metal, with a 4 ½" spike mounted to a cruciform base. The base is currently held to the body by two star-heard studs, likely reproductions. Two of the base's studs are absent. A beautiful gilded metal Landwehr front plate is complete with silvered Garde star and reservist's cross. Front plate holes have been enlarged, indicating a possible replacement plate. The leather portions are moderately crazed as is typical. The front visor trim needs a bit of simple adjustment. The gilt, slightly convex chin scales are held to the helmet with two gilt rosettes. The leather sweatband remains, but the silk lining is absent. There is evidence of some old repairs, otherwise it is a visually appealing helmet in very good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
