    Description

Prussian Fusilier Regiment Queen Victoria of Sweden Model 1897 Officer's Helmet. This superb helmet measures 9 ¾-inches to the tip of the spike. Marked size 57. The front visor is trimmed in gilded brass; the neck shield is unbound. Gilded-brass spine running from the edge of the neck shield to the spike base. The helmet displays the unique helmet plate of the 33rd and 34th regiments of Queen Victoria of Sweden's Fusiliers. The gilded-brass eagle plate is mounted to the helmet with threaded posts and nuts. There are no additional holes in the helmet body but there is a partial outline of an earlier plate behind the eagle. The 4 ½-inch tall spike is mounted to a round base secured to the helmet via four star-head screws and nuts. Gilded-brass, flat chin scales with plain rosettes and retaining both cockades. Wide leather sweatband and silk lining. A most attractive helmet.

Condition: Near excellent. The leather displays only modest crazing and scratching and neck shield is not misshapen. A few trivial dents to the body. Spine lacking the retaining screw on the neck shield. From the collection of J. T. Hamrick, M. D.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
