    Description

Imperial German Prussian Guard Enlisted Mans' Spiked Helmet. An interesting helmet in need of careful restoration. The standard leather body features gilded brass trim. The round spike base is mounted to the body via four round-head studs. Currently a white buffalo hair parade plume is mounted to the helmet. The front plate features a large gilt metal Prussian eagle with a guard's star centered on the eagle's breast. The front plate is mounted via two threaded posts and retaining nuts. There are no additional holes present. The eagle may be a later replacement. The visors and body have suffered through improper storage; the rear visor warped and detached; the front visor with significant warping. Only one section of the chin scales remain and only the Reichs cockade is present. The liner is the standard enlisted type. Though only in fair condition, proper and careful restoration could return it to a state of better presentation.

    Estimate: $1,500 - up.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
