    Description

French Second Empire Cuirassier Officers' Helmet. The body is silvered metal with a black fur turban, the visors banded in gilt metal. The gilded comb is decorated on both sides with volutes and laurel leaves and the front bears the head of Medusa, above her a flaming grenade with red horsehair brush. A black horsehair tail hangs from the rear of the comb. The leather-backed ornate gilded chinchains are attached to two large rosette bosses. A gilded socket on the left side supports a large red feather plume. The nine-fingered brown leather liner is in very good condition and securely attached to the helmet. There are no maker's marks or regimental property marks immediately visible. The helmet remains in extraordinary condition with some scattered loss to the fur turban and tarnishing to the silvered metal skull The leather backing on the chinchains appears to be replaced, else it is in excellent condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
