Description

Civil War "McDowell" Pattern Forage Cap, Promotion Certificate & Hand-Drawn Map.
Owned and worn by George W. Flagg, Company E 1st Regiment Massachusetts Cavalry. Flagg served almost the entire war, enlisting in September of 1861 and mustering out in June of 1865. During that time, he rose from private to 1st Lieutenant. His first active service was in the Charleston Expedition, May through August of '62. Prior to the battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg Flagg participated in marches and skirmishes, then joined the Army of the Potomac. In '63, he was attached to the cavalry under General Stoneman during the Chancellorsville campaign. He later saw action at Rapidan Station, Brandy Station and Gettysburg. The remainder of his time was spent on the move serving as an escort for prisoners and seeing action under General Sheridan. His last service before mustering out in June of '65 was in the defense of Washington, D.C.. A full accounting from the Civil War database accompanies the lot.

A very fine example "McDowell" with original "1" and "crossed sabers" on the crown. The brown fabric lining and sweat band is intact with only a few stains and scattered holes. The cap is complete, showing the type of wear that tells the story of a soldier whose hat accompanied him throughout his tour of duty.

Included with the cap is an original map hand-drawn by George W. Flagg showing Co. E's positions while stationed in Charleston in May of 1862. Noted as "Rebel Pickets" and "Our Pickets", it shows positions around Beaufort, S.C. Also included is George Flagg's original Certificate of Promotion (10" x 15") to Sergeant of Co. E., 1st Mass. Cav. signed by the Colonel of the regiment.
