German East African Blockade of 1888-1890 Photo Archive. Group of photos pertaining to the Abushiri Revolt in German East Africa (Tanganyika) by Abushiri ibn Salim al-Harthi and his Arabic and Swahili followers. The revolt was triggered by efforts by the German East Africa Company to coerce the Sultan of Zanzibar to cede lands to their control, as well as the raising of the company flag over Das es Salaam. German naval forces were sent to the area in 1889 and, with the help of the British, the revolt was put down and its ringleader publicly executed. The photos were part of a souvenir album or portfolio documenting the expedition. There are 50 numbered photos (mostly 6" x 4" and 5" x 7"), each mounted on stiff boards with beveled gilt edges measuring 9.25" x 7". Each card is captioned and numbered. There is also a title board indicating this is a souvenir of a trip aboard the "S. M. S. Carola 1888-1890". The subjects include geographic locales, such as Zanzibar, native people, ships, researchers, sailors and soldiers. Very good condition with light wear to corners and edges.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
