George Armstrong Custer: Single Lieutenant of Cavalry Shoulder Strap - Custer's First Rank as a Fresh West Point Graduate at the Outset of the Civil War. Custer was graduated from West Point a year early in 1861 to satisfy the Army's urgent need for trained officers (famously, he graduated last in his class!). He joined the 2nd U.S. Cavalry just in time for the First Battle of Bull Run. From there his career was a dramatic upward trajectory. He repeatedly distinguished himself and ended the war as a brevet major general.

The lieutenant's shoulder strap was purchased by the consignor as part of lot 7 in Butterfields' 1995 Custer auction, with provenance of the Charles A. Custer Family Collection. It is a particularly important artifact in that it dates from early in Custer's career, before notoriety made it more likely that items related to him would be valued and preserved.
