George Armstrong Custer: His Civil War Major General's Shoulder Straps with Family Provenance. Custer's meteoric rise during the Civil War is the stuff of legends. At the outset of the War the fresh West Point graduate was commissioned a second lieutenant, but in the closing days of the conflict he had risen to the rank of brevet major general. While he would retain this rank for less than a year before being returned to his permanent rank of captain in the 5th Cavalry, he nonetheless was immortalized as the youngest major general in the Union Army at the age of 25! Measure1 1/2" x 4"

Shoulder straps are highly collectable among militaria enthusiasts as well as Custer aficionados. We are aware of a private sale of Grant's Lieutenant General's straps for in excess of $50,000. This important pair is certain to excite considerable bidder interest. Straps come with an original albumen of Custer on a 4" x 6" mount.

Provenance: From the Charles A. Custer Family Collection sold at Butterfield's Auctions.
