    Description

William Allen 1st Maine Heavy Artillery ID Disc.
The 1st Maine Heavy Artillery has the distinction of having the greatest number of men killed or mortally wounded in any one battle....and the owner of this ID was one of those casualties! The soldier who owned this ID disc was William Allen from Bangor, Maine. On June 18, 1864 at the Battle of Petersburg, Va., in an heroic assault on the enemy's works, Allen was mortally wounded, dying on June 20. He was one of 210 men who died from that engagement, including their Colonel Daniel Chaplin. The ID disc is the George Washington style of silver plated white metal, and measures 31mm. This style is pictured on page 44 of the reference source "Identification Discs of Union Soldiers in the Civil War". The disc shows wear, but all the stampings remain strong. On the reverse it reads: "W. Allen Co. B 1st. Reg. WAr of 1861 ME. H.A. Bangor, ME. A great addition to any collection.
