Very Rare Civil War Prisoner of War Survivor's Medal
Heavily gold plated bar at top with T- bar pin back with scalloped decoration at top, and sunken cartouche at bottom "Survivor Of". Two hand engraved .125" gold bars, "Libby Prison, 1865" and "Richmond, Va.". Cast bar at the bottom "Southern Military Prisons 1861 1865" These were produced in very limited quality with each example being serial numbered. This example carries the die stamped number 145 on the small tab for the suspensory loop for the medal. The bars are backed by a red/white/blue ribbon. The central theme on the obverse of the 1.25" X 1.5" gilt brass suspended medal is a prisoner wielding a club for protection, while being attacked by a pack of dogs. Stacked cannonballs on each corner with rims bearing the following, "U. S. A. & N. B. A. / orgzd 1880 / Death Before Dishonor / N. Y. S. U." The reverse depicts, as the central motif, the Great Seal of the United States, with cannons at each corner. The seal is surrounded by the following:" Fiat Justicia Ruatcoelum; Let Us Forgive; But Not Forget; Civil War U. S. of A." Medal overall about mint retaining all of the original gilt. A very scarce medal.
