Union Soldier's Letter by Charles Hall of Company "F", 8th Illinois Cavalry with Content About the Sick and Wounded. Four pages, 5" x 8"; Frederick, Maryland; October 31, 1862. While recuperating from an illness in "Barrack F" of U.S. General Hospital, Hall writes to his wife, describing the wounds of his fellow soldiers. In part: "I still feel thankful I am no worse off... On my [missing word] is a fine boy with a would on the back-top of his head made by a Ball or piece of Shell at the Battle of Antietam... A piece of the skull 2 inches or so long and 1 wide has been taken out and a piece of Brain with it. Still he is sound in health. He laid on the Battle field for 5 days - cared for by some of his Regt. Next is a small pale boy with a bullet in his body just next to his hip - bullet not out. Next come 2 Secesh, one with both eyes shot plumb out by a bullet - the other with one eye out and the sight of the other destroyed by a Ball passing in at one and out back of the other. Add to all this all sorts of diseases and wounds imaginable and you have a faint conception of a Hospital... I was talking with a sick Rebel... who was taken Pris just before the Battle of South Mountain... He said he did not volunteer - he belonged to a Co of Home guards raised to protect their locality only from incursions by our forces, that a force came and took them all to New Orleans... I said it was a very unfortunate war. 'Yes', he said, 'it is very. I don't see what it was got up for. We had as good a Gov't before the war as anyone need &c.' He had been with Jackson and sad he killed more of his men by marching than fighting."

Condition. With the usual mail folds and very clean. Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope, which has been cleanly torn open along the left. Envelope has light soiling and some creasing. A typed transcript of the letter is included.
