Description

    Confederate POWs at Gettysburg

    Three Documents Related to the General Hospital at Gettysburg, Including Two Returns of Military and Political Prisoner, from the paper of surgeon Henry Janes. All three documents date from August (2) and October 1863. The first is a two page letter from William S. King, "Med[ical] Dir[ector] Office, Chambersburg, Aug, 25, 1863," notifying Janes that the contracts of two surgeons have been annulled, and requesting a list of patients "now in Gettysburg & Camp Letterman."

    The Return for the month of August 1863, 24" x 6.25", listing the number prisoners, all captured at the Battle of Gettysburg. In the remarks column is noted, "Six (6) Confederate Surgeons on duty in Gen. Hospital, are not reported as prisoners. Also three (3) Confederate Chaplains are not included in this report." Janes makes additional notes on the verso about transfers, and number of prisoners turned over to the Provost Marshal, and number of soldiers that died for the period July 21, 1863 to August 31, 1863.

    The second Return in the lot is for the month of October 1863, and lists the names of twenty-nine prisoners transferred to the General Hospital at Baltimore, and 17 prisoners who died during the month. All the names include their company and regiment.

    Henry Janes enlisted on June 24, 1861 as a surgeon into Field Staff 3rd Vermont Infantry. On March 26, 1863, he was commissioned into the US Volunteers Medical Staff.

    Condition: All are gently toned with the usual folds.
