    Description

Texas and New Mexico: Pre-Civil War Frontier Documents. 1) 3-pg. document on ledger paper, secured with circular metal brad, 7.75" x 10", March 14, 1856, signed by James G. Martin as Assistant Quartermaster. It is a "List of Clothing Camp & Garrison Equipage to be prepared for shipment to Capt. Jno. C. McFerran AQM at Fort Union N. Mexico to supply the troops stationed in N. Mexico for the year commencing July 1st 1856." The material was sourced from the Schuylkill Arsenal. A meticulous list in great condition. Martin was a veteran of the Mexican War, having lost one arm at Churubusco, before relinquishing command to Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. He was nicknamed "Old One Wing" and became an active Confederate general in the Civil War, despite his handicap. 2) Similar document to #1, but only 1 1/2 pages, signed by Henry C. Wayne as Bvt. Major A.Q.M. Dated September 28, 1857, it requests that supplies from the Schuylkill Arsenal be readied for transport to San Antonio, Texas "for the annual supply of Compy 'K' Mounted Rifles, stationed at Fort Bliss Texas." Henry Wayne was a veteran of the Mexican War who investigated the use of camels for the southwest frontier territories in the 1850s, traveling to the Middle East to purchase nearly one hundred camels. He became a brigadier general in the Confederate army, but participated in only two battles, spending most of his time as Adjutant and Inspector General in Georgia.
