    Rare Requisition for "Ordnance and Ordnance Stores for Fort Sumpter [Sumter] April 20, 1861" Signed by Lt. Colonel Roswell Sabine Ripley. One page, 7 ¾" x 9 ¾", in ink. Written less than a week after the bombardment and surrender of Fort Sumter, this document requests among other things, powder, hand spikes, primers, lanyards, sabots of various sizes, cartridge bags of various sizes, fuses, hand tools, etc. The document is signed in the lower right corner "R S Ripley / Lt. Col. Art." The document is in excellent condition with only trivial toning and old fold creases.

    Roswell Sabine Ripley (1823-1887) graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in the class of 1843 - the same class as Ulysses S. Grant. He fought with distinction during the Mexican-American War and in the Indian hostilities in Florida. Shortly after, he left the army to pursue business interests in Charleston. Upon organization of the South Carolina army he received the rank of lieutenant colonel, commanding the First Artillery battalion. At the bombardment of Ft. Sumter he was commended for his services in charge of the batteries on Sullivan's Island. Shortly after he was commissioned a Brigadier General in the provisional Confederate States Army, serving with distinction until the war's end.
