Panoramic Photograph of the Presidio, San Francisco, California, J. D. Givens Photographer. 32.25" x 8". A wonderful image taken at the Presidio in San Francisco titled "Parade of the 9th (Cavalry) Corps Area Training Center", taken in 1922 by photographer J. D. Givens. Givens was the official photographer at the Presidio for forty years. The image shows a large number of troops, many on horseback, the Presidio, the military barracks, and San Francisco Bay. Originally built by the Mexican government in 1776 and named El Presidio Real de San Francisco, as a Spanish fort. The Presidio was seized by the U.S. Military in 1846 and served as an Army Headquarters until 1995. It was also used as a refugee camp following the great San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906. It served U.S. troops in the Mexican War, the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I and II. Slight cockling to photo paper, else fine.
