ID Disk Of William Rathburn Of The 59th NY Who Died In Andersonville Prison. William Rathbone, age 23, enlisted on August 31, 1861 at Lowville, NY as a private in the 59th NY Infantry. At the Battle of Petersburg he was one of the many captured. He was first taken to Richmond, and then to Lynchburg, and finally confined at Andersonville Prison, where he died on October 30, 1864 (National Archives records included). The Disk was excavated by a collector in Georgia several years ago. In the reference source "Identification Discs" this style is found on page 42, and is the rarer white metal variety with a small shield and the phrase "the Union and the Constitution, War of 1861". The piece measures 30mm, and has even wear. All lettering is visible, as is the stamping. Below the shield one battle is listed that being "Mine Run". One the reverse it reads "W.M. Rathburn Co. C 59th Regt. N.Y. Vols. 3rd Brig. 2nd Div. 2nd Corps". One of the most historic identified disks we have offered..
