Description

Great White Fleet: An Exceptional Japanese-Made Naval Silkwork Embroidery for the American Market by the George Washington Company, Benten-dori, Yokohama, Japan c. 1907. The gorgeous silkwork picture entitled "Washington Crossing the Delaware" was made by the George Washington Company of Yokohama, Japan and measures 25 inches by 38 inches. It was one of several images that were available to sailors of the Great White Fleet that visited Japan and between 1907 and 1909. The original George Washington Company catalogue described this piece as "Embroidered with Silk and pure Gold Thread on the best quality Satin...The Picture of the Washington Crossing the Delaware is painted on silk in Water Colour." The original cost was $10. The company was established in 1880 to sell all sorts of Japanese art goods, especially items popular with the American Navy including embroidered kimonos, tablecloths, shawls, painted cushion covers, oil paintings on canvas, calendars and Christmas cards. In the center of the silkwork is a cabinet card of a sailor from the USS Louisiana, one of the sixteen battleships in the Great White Fleet. A notation on the paper on the back of the frame identifies the sailor as Roy Sinclair Davis of Denver, Colorado who joined the United States Navy at the age of 12 ½ years in 1894 and served until 1941. That attribution has not been confirmed. The picture is attractively framed to an overall size of 29 ¼ inches by 42 ¼ inches. Very fine condition.
