"...we had last week 95 deserters in jail..."

Confederate Soldier's War-date Letter. Rebel soldier J. M. White wrote this 4-page letter to his wife from Columbia [SC] on January 22, 1865. It is written in a clear hand on a single sheet folded in half. At this late stage in the war, White tries to convey some hopeful war news. "... It appears that Hood did not sustain so heavy a loss in Tenn. as was reported. His army is on its way to Augusta Ga. His advance was at Macon. It is also reported that Lee's cavalry is at or near Augusta. If these reports be true, Sherman can be held in check until an army can be organized in this State strong enough to meet him with some prospect of success. I think the war will be waged principally in our state during this winter... it is probable we will not be disturbed again for the next three months unless it be to fight in the defence of Columbia... We still have charge of the jail. The number of confederate prisoners has increased gradually for the last two or three months and they are more trouble than the Yankees. We had last week 95 deserters in jail..."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
