Description

Berdan Sharpshooters: William B. Greene Letter. 4-page published letter, written on all sides of a single folded sheet, Camp of the 2d U.S.S.S. Near Petersburg, Va., July 25, 1864, from William B. Greene to his brother Marlon, back home in New Hampshire. Some excerpts: "... Yesterday we were digging in the trenches all day... At about three o'clock... one of our 32 pounders opened and sent a shell right into the enemy's fort in our front & in plain sight of where we were at work. I saw it burst & saw the Johnnys hustle around and get out of sight & then I made up my mind that I had better be getting down in the trench... Bang went one of their guns & the shell went whistling over us... Shells are flying backward & forward most of the time in the front line. But the 2nd Corps are not troubled with them, being so far in the rear. The Petersburg Express goes over every night & morning. What we call the Express is a large 32 pounder cannon which sends one of those large shells into the city every 15 minutes for four hours a day. A Battery of 32 lb's called the 7 Sisters gives them one of their puffing shells occasionally. Mortar Batterys are at work in the 9th & 18th Corps all the time... These shells are round & go far in the air & drop straight down & while in the air a stream of fire can be seen while the fuse is burning. In the night they look very much like fire works. But few men are injured on our side by them. Most of the trenches have bomb proofs for the men to run under... I had got a nice lady correspondent in Ohio & have received a number of letters from her..." Sold together with the original transmittal envelope with stamp removed. We are also selling a small group of war relics collected by Greene during the war. This lot appears elsewhere in the sale.
