African American Troop Recruitment Document from Kentucky. 5.25" x 6.25" printed form, with penciled-in correction, dated April 9, 1864 from Paris, Kentucky, signed in type by H. T. Brent, Deputy Provost Marshal of Bourbon County, Kentucky, to an unspecified addressee, stating: "You will report to me, in Paris, Ky., immediately, what number of Negro men you own between the ages of 20 and 45. By order of Capt. F. H. Moore, Provost Marshal 7th District." In April 1864, the Union actively began recruiting African American troops in Kentucky, promising them freedom in return for signing up. The efforts were successful in raising 24,000 troops in that state. As a border state, slaves owned by loyal Kentuckians were not set free by Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. We suspect that this effort was directed towards slaves in rebel-held territory who were enticed to escape to Union lines with the promise of freedom. There is a faint inscription at the top related to the preaching of a sermon at "father's funeral". An historic document.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
