DescriptionA. B. White Autograph Letter Signed to Sam Houston Asking Assistance for a Veteran of the Texas Revolution. Two pages, 7.75" x 12", Paris, Henry County, Tennessee; January 17, 1856. A letter to Sam Houston seeking his aid in assisting White's fellow townsman, James Swinny, in his efforts to claim land he is entitled to as an ex-soldier. White claimed that Swinny, who had fought in several battles for Texas independence, had lost his discharge papers and was attempting to reach out to his former officers who could vouch for Swinny's eligibility for land. White asks Houston for information of any of the officers who Swinny may have served under.
Condition: The letter has usual horizontal and vertical folds and dampstaining. Soiling on verso. There are several small worm holes in the letter. Some of the ink has faded, but most of the letter remains legible.
The letter reads in part: "The object of this letter, principally, is to know of you, if you can give him any information of any of the officers above named-their whereabouts & and is there no shorter way to get at the matter. Mr. Swinny has a large family to support.if he could get the land that he is entitled to, it would help him greatly, and it was at his suggestion that I write to you, saying.that he never knew you, to fail to recognize a common soldier's claims when with you & that he thought you might aid him now."
