[Texas Rangers]. Manuscript Song: "The dying Rainger [sic]," circa 1870s. Four integral pages, 7.75" X 9.75", n. p. This is an early version of a classic folk song by an unknown author. Adapted from an earlier song, "The Dying Soldier," written sometime around the Civil War. In the original, the soldier is from New England and his enemies are "traitors," probably Confederates. Later versions used in Texas variously describe the enemy as Indians, but in this version they remain "traitors," most likely Union soldiers.

The lyrics have been entirely transcribed with small differences to the modern version. This version is handwritten in brown (though completed in blue) ink by "E. M Smith For a friend W. H. Branch." Heavily worn with weakened folds; the horizontal fold is nearly detached from the right edge. Moderately toned with scattered areas of foxing and ink smudging. Some of the text is faded. With an additional poem, "First in This Country a Stranger I Came," two pages, 5" x 8", n. p., n. d. [circa 1870s], "Writen Bye [sic] James H. Brewer for a friend Mr. W. H. Branch."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
