[Spanish American War]. Autograph Letter Signed by Leslie J. Wisener, Corporal, Company C, 6th Massachusetts Infantry, U. S. Volunteers. Fifteen pages, 7" x 8.75", Lares, Puerto Rico; October 15, 1898. An extensive letter from Corporal Wisener to his mother "Bell" concerning the situation in Lares and the activities of his company in Puerto Rico, which he described as "a wretched country." "You have heard of the Wild West and the state of affairs in Armenia a few years ago," he wrote, "well I don't believe they were any worse than this section of the island where we are now." Lares, according to Wisener, was the home of many fine coffee plantations owned by wealthy Spaniards, who employed the poor of the island to work for them. The Puerto Ricans, claimed Wisener, "were disappointed in their hope that the Americans would drive all Spaniards whether peaceable citizens or soldiers out of the island and turn the valuable property over to them," and as a result, "are burning the houses of the Spaniards and committing murder in many places." Thus, it was "dangerous to be seen in the street of the town after 10 oclock let alone the country roads." Otherwise, the Spaniards on the island treated the American soldiers very well and, outside of attempting to keep the peace, the Americans, according to Wisener, "have absolutely nothing to do but eat and sleep." Wisener wrote of the food he and his fellow soldiers were eating and the comfortable accommodations afforded them. Approximately half of the letter was a response to what his mother wrote in her previous letter to him, dated September 18, 1898. A second unrelated letter from 1918 is included.
Condition: The Wisener letter has prominent horizontal fold in the center of the pages, with weakness and tearing at the middle. The first and last pages have tearing and paper loss at the folds and edges.
