    Description

    [Siege of Charleston]. A Letter to Georgia Governor Richard Howly with Information about the Locations of the British. One page with address cover on verso, 8.25" x 12.5". "Augusta Camp. 12th February 1780." In full: "This morning my express arrived from Charlestown and brought the inclosed resolves of the Caro. House of Assembly - The Govr under the date of the 5th Instant writes me that some of the Enemies Ships of War were cruising off the bar - that some of their transports were arrived off Tybee - but that it was still uncertain whether their whole forces were destined against Charlestown, or part for the W: Indies - The Effectivelly means are using to render the Enemies attempt unsuccessful. The reinforcement from the No Ward are far advance and as the weather still continues unsettled, its more than probable our reinforcements will reach [unintelligible word] kind. I should be glad to have the names of several colonels of militia in this state and to know whether Captain summary Corps act separately, or under any particular Colo of a Regiment. Intending to issue orders immediately to the several officer. Where to repair with men several detachment ... Horsebacke and requests your Honor will give the necessary orders to each Colo and commander of a separate Corps, to pay attention thereto. I am with great respect... honors. Most Obedt & Very Humble Servt. [signature is unintelligible]."

    A hurried postscript is added in the lower left corner: "When my orders to the several offices are wrote, shall send one for your perusal and w'd wish your orders to go by the expresses. I shall send for that response. --- Govr Howly---"

    Address cover on verso to "the Hon'ble Richa'd Howly... Governor of the State of Georgia."

    Condition: Heavy wear, and toning. Repairs on verso to tears along separations, with bits of paper loss affecting a few words. Repairs on verso were made at an earlier time using tissue and adhesive, resulting in some staining with showthrough on recto.
