    Description

    [Pensacola Indians]. A Receipt for Rum and Sugar for the Use of the Indian Affairs Department of the British Crown. One page, 7.25" x 12". Pensacola, circa 1779. At top is a receipt of acknowledgment signed by William McKinnon for "3118 gallons of rum for the use of the Indian department" received on October 9, 1779. A second line item indicates he 1605 kg of Muscovado Sugar. Beneath, is an endorsement that the receipt has been examined and approved by Major General John Campbell, as received from Alexander Cameron, Superintendent of Indian Affairs. This is likely for the use of the Cherokee Indians in the Pensacola, Florida area. The Cherokee had an uneasy alliance with the British; and fought against the Spanish.
    Condition: Uneven toning, with bold ink. Document is fragile, with chipping, creasing, and small tears at margins. Soiling at top and right margins.
