[Mier Expedition]. Ewen Cameron's Texas Volunteers Company Roster. One sheet (handwritten by Israel Canfield with names on front and back), 6.25" x 7", n.p., circa September 1842. "Camerons Compy" is written in the top margin. Both front and back contain two columns, one labeled "Old Members" and the other "New Members." Sixteen names are listed in ink as old members, while twenty-four names are listed in ink as new members. In all, forty names are written in ink, including Samuel Walker ("S. H. Walker"), Israel Canfield, John McMullen, Peter Lusk ("P. H. Lusk"), and William Van Horn.Mexican General Adrian Woll invaded Texas in 1842, capturing San Antonio on September 11. Within six days, 202 Texans had answered the call for the defense of the republic, forty of them in Ewen Cameron's company. Likely, the sixteen "Old Members" were Texas Rangers from Cameron's Texas Ranger Company of Spies, which he commanded earlier in 1842 headquartered in Corpus Christi. Many of these men-labeled "Old Members"-served as spies for Jack Hays during the few weeks after being added to this roster. After forcing General Woll to retreat back to Mexico, many of these men went on as part of the Somervell and Mier Expeditions. (Cameron was killed during the Mier Expedition.)
Toned paper with smoothed folds. Some minor stains. Two large ink blotches affect some names. "Spy" and "Dead" have been written in pencil next to some names. On the verso, numerous names have been written in very faint pencil.
