Description

[Mexican War]. Invitation and Dinner Menu in Honor of General Robert E. Patterson. Less than three months after his division captured the town of Jalapa following the Battle of Cerro Gordo (April 18, 1847), Major General Robert E. Patterson (1792-1881), who was wounded during the battle, was honored by "His Fellow Citizens" with a dinner at the United States Hotel in Philadelphia, July 2, 1847. The invitation, which measures 5.25" x 3", features a beautifully colored vignette bearing the names Cerro Gordo and Vera Cruz. The dinner, the menu for which measures 5.25" x 7.75", is comprised of five courses and includes soups, cold dishes, roasted meats, and desserts. Also, a 6.5" x 8.5" engraved portrait of Patterson, in uniform, by A. B. Walter of Philadelphia. Mounted directly below the portrait is a 3.25" x .75" clipped signature of Patterson, circa 1821. All four pieces are mounted to a backing sheet (two to a side) to an overall size of 10" x 13.25".

General Patterson, a veteran of the War of 1812 and Mexican War, served at the opening of the Civil War as commander of the Army of the Shenandoah. His failure to contain Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston led partly to the Federal loss at the First Battle of Manassas and led to his dismissal and the end of his military career.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
