[Mexican War]. Captain George W. Adams Autograph Testimony Signed "G. W. Adams." One page, 7.5" x 5.75", Robertson County [Texas], n. d. [circa 1847]. Capt. George Adams, commander of Company "C," [Walter P.] Lane's Battalion, Texas Mounted Volunteers (here called the "Texas Volunteer Cavalry"), certifies on behalf of Richard Hoket, a bugler in his company, regarding a lost "sorrel horse valued at twenty five dollars while on march from San Antonio to Comargo [Camargo]. . . . the loss sustained was not from any fault or negligence on the part of Claimant and was remounted entirely at his own expense on a horse not furnished or owned by the U.S. nor owned by any other mounted Volunteer . . . and remained so mounted until discharged." Folds. Unevenly toned with scattered spots of foxing.

Walter P. Lane (1817-1892), a native of Ireland, arrived in Texas in 1836 and took part in the Revolution, seeing action at the Battle of San Jacinto, served as a privateer in the Texas Navy while on the Thomas Toby, then returned to land and joined the Texas Rangers under John C. "Jack" Hays. During the Mexican War, Lane followed Hays south. After the Battle of Monterrey, he was given his own battalion. After the war, he was a '49er in California and a merchant in Arizona. Lane continued his service to Texas during the Civil War and was severely wounded at the Battle of Mansfield [Louisiana, April 8, 1864]. He was made a brigadier general in the Confederate Army shortly before Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Lane returned to Texas after the war and remained there until his death.
