[Kentucky Volunteers in the Mexican War]. Muster Roll of a Company in the 2nd Kentucky Volunteer Regiment, October- December 1846, signed by Captain William Daugherty and Colonel William R. McKee. One sheet (partly printed on both sides), 26.5" x 17", fall/winter 1846, n.p. [Mexico], entitled "Muster Roll of Captain William Daugherty, Company of the Second Regiment, Ky & Ohio Brigade of Kentucky Militia, commanded by Col. Wm. R. McKee ordered into service of the United Stated by Gov. Wm. Owsley from the thirty-first day of October 1846 to the thirty first day of December 1846."

The list contains the names and military information (such as date of enlistment, period of enlistment, etc.) of twelve officers and fifty-three volunteers. Also included are the names of two discharged men and one death (at Cerralvo on December 6, 1846). Several of the men were "Left sick at Cerralvo" in December, while others were "Left sick at Louisville" in June.

This company served with the rest of the 2nd Kentucky Volunteer Regiment at the Battle of Buena Vista in February 1847. At one point during the battle, Santa Anna's forces backed the Kentucky volunteers into a vulnerable position in a deep ravine. There, Colonel William R. McKee was killed, likely with many others on this muster roll. Tears beginning on this document along some folds, also at the intersections of a few folds. Minor foxing with some very slight discoloration along some margins.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
