Early Two-Piece Eagle Militia Belt Plate Dug at Shiloh Battlefield.
Listed as #132 in O'Donnell & Campbell's "Americana Military Belt Plates" reference book (an incomplete specimen, at that). Manufactured in the 1824-1832 period. According to the provenance that accompanies it, it was dug by "Uncle Dave" Calloway of Jackson, Mississippi in 1960. It was located on the slope leading up to General William Tecumseh Sherman's camp site which, on the morning of April 6, 1862, was overrun by a surprise dawn attack by Cleburne's Brigade. It was found along with Confederate droop-wing officer's buttons and related accessories. Given the locale and the context of the find, it appears obvious that this is a CSA office-worn plate. Great shape, especially for a dug specimen.
