Civil War: Texas Confederate Postal-Used Covers. 1) 5 1/8" x 2 3/4" envelope (lacking flap and enclosure), printed by O. F. Zink's Book and Job Printing Office in Houston. It is addressed to Mrs. M. A. Peebles in Hempstead, Texas. It is free franked by "O.B." and inscribed at the bottom: "Wm. G. Tobin/ Capt Com'g/ Squadron 2d Texas Cav en route to Eagle Pass [illeg.] Palestine & Brians". Mrs. Peebles was the wife of Dr. Richard Rogers Peebles, an Ohio-born veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto who refused to ally himself with the Confederacy and was subsequently arrested and send to prison in Piedras Negras, Mexico, across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas. 2) 5 3/8" x 3 1/8" cover (lacking enclosure with damage to flap), with two upside-down Confederate 5-cent stamps, hand-cancelled. Post-marked May 13 [n.y.]. The back side is inscribed by the sender "Mr. Leon Gray/ Port Hudson/ La/ Company C 7th Texas Infantry". Leon used this envelope to send a letter to his wife in Jamestown, Texas. The 7th Texas fought at Fort Donelson, Chattanooga and the Atlanta campaign. When the war ended, only 67 men remained out of 1005 names on the rolls.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
