Civil War Regimental Ballot Box. Wooden box, 15" wide x 12" across x 10" high, with a slot in the lid for insertion of ballots. The front has a stenciled inscription: "Co C 124th N. Y. V. I.". The pine wood is stained an olive-brown color. The key is missing. Outside of some roughness around the lock, it is in excellent condition and appears to have seen light use. While the box may have been used for the election of company officers, we believe its primary usage was as a receptacle of ballots used in the state and national elections of 1864. New York, along with Pennsylvania, Ohio and Connecticut, were some of the states that permitted voting by soldiers in the field in the election of 1864. Soldiers from other states were prevented from voting unless they could obtain furloughs to travel home.
